There are moments in life that stop you in your tracks — moments that change the way you see everything.

For me, one of those moments came when I received a phone call no grandparent ever wants to hear. My 10-month-old granddaughter, Isla, was being life-flighted to the hospital. She was losing mobility — her little body slowly becoming paralyzed — and the doctors didn’t yet know why.

At that time, I was in Orlando at a conference, miles away from my family. The feeling of helplessness was overwhelming. Every instinct in me wanted to get on the first plane home, to be by my daughter’s side. But when I called her, her voice was calm — steady, even in the storm.

She said, “Mom, it’s going to be okay. Stay where you are. We’re going to get through this.”

And in that moment, her faith carried me.

🌿 The Diagnosis

Soon after, Isla was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition that causes inflammation of the spinal cord. It was attacking her ability to move, breathe, and even control basic functions. For a baby — just 10 months old — it was something no one could have prepared for.

She spent over a month in the hospital. My daughter never left her side.

That kind of strength… it can’t be taught. It’s born out of love, courage, and the fierce determination of a mother who refuses to give up.

At home, her other little one, Rowan — not even two years old — waited for her. Balancing it all was nearly impossible, but somehow, she did it. She showed me what unwavering devotion looks like.

💪 A Mother’s Strength, A Family’s Faith

Through every test, every sleepless night, and every unknown, my daughter stood firm. She asked the questions, learned the language of medical terms no parent should have to know, and became an advocate for her child in the most beautiful way.

I couldn’t be more proud of her.

And I couldn’t be more inspired by Isla. Despite all she’s been through, she radiates joy. Her smile lights up every room she enters. She’s proof that even in the hardest chapters, hope can still shine through.

🌤️ The Road Ahead

Today, Isla’s spine shows no more lesions — a miracle we celebrate with deep gratitude. Her journey with mobility is ongoing, and there are still challenges ahead, but her spirit? Unbreakable.

Their little family is home again — reunited, surrounded by love, and moving forward one day at a time.

This journey has reminded me of something I’ve always believed but now understand even more deeply: growth happens in the hardest seasons.

Sometimes life doesn’t go the way we planned, but it still leads us exactly where we’re meant to be — closer to strength, closer to faith, closer to one another.

🌸 What I’ve Learned

Watching my daughter walk through this has taught me so much about resilience and the power of love in motion. It’s one thing to talk about growth — it’s another to live it out when everything feels uncertain.

It’s reminded me that even when life feels out of control, there’s still purpose in the pain. There’s still beauty in the process.

And sometimes, the greatest gift is watching the next generation carry the torch of courage higher than we ever imagined.

To my daughter:
You are my hero. You’ve shown me what real strength looks like.
And to sweet Isla — your smile reminds us that even in the hardest moments, joy is still possible.

You both embody what Choice Journey is all about — choosing hope, choosing growth, choosing love, no matter what life brings.
